A tour of old neighbours
Joyce Stuart takes Helena Spyrou, a project artist at the Carlton Flats Arts Project, on a tour of her neighbourhood, visiting with old neighbours and recalling fond memories.
The walk-ups, and Joyce’s old home, will be demolished in 2010 to make way for the redevelopment of the estate.
The Carlton Flats Arts Project works with current and relocated tenants to document the redevelopment and to acknowledge the contribution made by the communities living on the estate to Carlton and to Melbourne generally.
This tour goes for seven minutes, and has four tour stops.

About your tour guide
In 1974, Joyce Stewart moved with her four children to a Palmerston Street walk-up flat in the Carlton Public Housing Estate.
In 2006 she was relocated to a cottage in nearby Canning Street, and although she remains close to her old home, she misses the sense of community she enjoyed there.

G’day to Joyce and all the present and former public housing resident’s.
Carlton flats long time resident Joyce Stuart audio interview of her time living there. I remember Joyce is a very kind woman whom always made me welcome at her flat as a young fellow. With her children Ian,Barry,Kerry and Mark they were one of many families at the flats whom i remember fondly back in the late 1970′s and early 1980′s.

Hi, I found this interview very interesting and the lady (Mrs Stuart) was one of my neighbours between 1978-81. I was only 6 years old at the time and I’m sure she would remember my older brother and sister Gerry and Gaby. Good to hear Mrs Stuart is keeping well.
Kindest regards,
Tony
