The walk-ups, and Joyce’s old home, will be demolished in 2010 to make way for the redevelopment of the estate.

The Carlton Flats Arts Project works with current and relocated tenants to document the redevelopment and to acknowledge the contribution made by the communities living on the estate to Carlton and to Melbourne generally.

This tour goes for seven minutes, and has four tour stops.

About your tour guide

In 1974, Joyce Stewart moved with her four children to a Palmerston Street walk-up flat in the Carlton Public Housing Estate.

In 2006 she was relocated to a cottage in nearby Canning Street, and although she remains close to her old home, she misses the sense of community she enjoyed there.

A tour of the Elgin Square walkups of Carlton Housing Estate.

Why are they called the walkups? Where is the grassy knoll? What happens when a resident catches a non-resident using the carpark?

Tour guide and resident Maurice Wilson gives you the insider’s tour around the public spaces of the Carlton Housing Estate on Palmerston Street. This is a tour tinged with some sadness and a desire to record the places where Maurice spent his best times – the Estate is set to be redeveloped, and in the meantime, all of its residents watch and wait to be relocated.

The tour goes for 10 minutes and has an introduction in Maori.

From the land of the Long White Cloud (NZ), born in the year of the Monkey, on the cusp of Gemini and Cancer, all-round performer including cultural dancer and volunteer extraordinaire; I am Maurice Uehoka Milroy Wilson.
I moved to Melbourne in December, 2005 and have been living (with my partner) in the Carlton Elgin Square Walk Ups since April, 2006.
Redevelopment, relocation and maintenance issues drew me to the Carlton Arts Project (supporting the Pink Room) and then the Carlton Housing Estate’s Resident’s Services as Secretary.
You’ll find my face on a billboard on the corner of Elgin and Canning Streets including posters at the Basketball Court adjacent.
